The Cafe at Hood Aerodrome

We had a visit from North Shore Aero Club when they were flying around Masterton.

They have been in a 5 days trip around New Zealand, when they were flying in the Wairarapa they landed at Hood Aerodrome and they came to the cafe for lunch. They enjoyed their meals and the atmosphere at the cafe.

They were very happy because they can fly and stop here if they feel like and have something to drink and eat.

They parked their airplaines at our Cafe Aircraft Parking.

Please come back it was a pleasure to host you here and it was really nice to see so many aircrafts together at our parking.

The New entrance at the cafe

Now we have done the entrance with gravel so nobody gets their feet muddy when it rains and also we have put the sign on the top of the door.

Now it looks more like an entrance for a Cafe than just a hangar.

Wine Tasting

On 6th August (Friday) Vaunghan from Paulownia Estate wines is coming to do a wine tasting at the cafe from 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm.

Entry is free so come and try the wine and if you like it you can get a glass from Snap Roll Cafe. Because Fridays are our Happy Hour you can get the glass cheaper than usual.

Don’t miss out and come after work and enjoy our environment and relaxing place.

Neil Frances came to give a talk

Today Neil Frances from Wairarapa Archives came to give a talk about Hood Aerodrome and its history.

It was a very interesting and informative talk. Neil explained why the Aerodrome had the name it has, what aircrafts came to Hood Aerodrome, the roll the Airfield played on the WW2, when Wairarapa Aero Club was founded, ……….

The cafe was full, there were around 50 people listening and watching the awesome power point presentation that Neil had prepared.

The talk last for about 45 minutes and then people asked for coffee and some lunch at the cafe.

People were very satisfied with the chat they had earlier and the lunch they had after.

Happy Hour on Fridays

Happy Hour on Fridays from 3.30 pm till 6.00 pm.

It is a very nice place to come and have something to drink and eat after work, you can relax and talk to your friends, family or just enjoy the atmosphere by yourself.

On our Happy Hour we sell one of the local wines cheaper than usual per glass (Paulownia Estate and Loopline) . Also one of the beer that we sell is cheaper on Fridays afternoon (Stella Artois Legere, Steinlarger Pure, Steinlarger Light, Speight Medal Gold).

For those ones who doesn’t drink or are the drivers we have big selection of non-alcoholic drinks (Coke, Ginger Beer, Lemonade, Lemon and Lime Bitters, Juices, coffee and tea).

Celebrations at the Cafe

We held our first party at the cafe last weekend – for a lovely lady whos birthday it was. The Snap Roll team created some fantastic food for the revellers – and the revellers were the best kind you can imagine as they wanted hot chocolates and coffees rather than more and more wine

Shauni’s famous chocolate caramels disappeared in the blink of an eye, hilariously handed round while the band were singing ‘give me chocolate’. And Katie’s rustic ham and cheese on crispy baked baguettes, drizzled with Spanish Olive Oil flew off the platters.

Our venue spruced up nicely with the addition of balloons and my main fear – that it would be cold – quickly disappeared as 45 party goers heated up the place nicely, especially when the dancing started.

The finishing touch for us was when the band sung to Katie and I at the end, to say thank you. Its been a long time since I have been serenaded…er…actually don’t think I ever have!

Looking forward to more

New opening hours for winter

Well the days are getting a bit shorter and frankly quite a lot colder so clearly winter is on its way – even in the Wairarapa!!

We’ve decided to alter our opening hours – to cater for you early birds needing your Celcius fix a little earlier, and closing just that little bit earlier. Once our liquor licence comes through we might change our minds again but! for now here’s the hours

Thursday: 9 – 3:30

Friday: 9 – 3:30

Saturday: 9 – 4

Sunday: 9- 4

So still somewhere for excellent coffee and carrot cake and french toast and quiche and sammies and toasties and and and…..all day on the weekends (Masterton town might be dead at that time but the airfield is BUZZING!!)

Got to keep the staff busy too, don’t want them goofing off because there aren’t enough customers in to serve…look what happens when it gets quiet….!!!

The airshow before the airshow

Snap Roll Cafe customers were treated to a free airshow this weekend – pilots from around the country came up to Hood to practice for the Anzac show on 24th April – their last opportunity as the aerodrome will be closed next weekend for the drag racing.

Outside the cafe looked like a Tiger Moth breeding colony…

and at one stage the SVAS Tiger Moth started her prop at this angled – blowing a couple of flat whites into next week….ah the downside of the view eh!

Plenty of formation flying for the crowds to oooh and ahh at too, going on right until the sun started to go down.

No sign of the Fe2B though, they’re saving that up for the 24th it seems.

The real thing, courtesy of The Vintage Aviator Ltd is on from midday on 24th April, with displays starting from 1:30pm. $20 adult, children $10, family $50 and you can get tickets at the gate.

Apparently the sunshine is guaranteed and its going to go down in history as the day with the least amount of wind ever experienced at Hood Aerodrome…we hope!
